A Happy Birthday Jesus Party

Kids Club is one of my most favorite parts of my week each week.

I love getting the chance to pour into the lives of our youngest students, sharing the love and truth of our Savior. We meet once a week and share a lesson, songs, crafts, and games with our elementary students, reminding them that they are each loved and valued by all of us workers and more importantly, by our Heavenly Father. I love it!

When I restarted Kids Club 5 years ago, I was the only adult volunteer. I had lots of great Middle and High School Helpers that year. But it was tough being the only "grown-up." Then the next year I was joined by the wife of one of our teachers and occasionally by other teachers as well. It was such a nice change having good, adult help. Well, this year I've been blessed to have the group of ladies in the picture below helping each week. I joke that we're sometimes stepping over each other. But it's so nice having such a big group there each week, sacrificing of their own time and energy to love on our kids.



And I'd be crazy to not mention the MS/HS helpers we have had each week. Even though I didn't get any pictures of them today, I can assure you they worked their tails off. These kids have been such a blessing to all of us adult volunteers. I can't imagine having to do Kids Club each and every week without them. We truly are blessed by each of them (the ones pictured below AND all the ones I don't have pictures of as well)!

 



So, now for the reason for this post...

Today we had our annual Kids Club Christmas Party. But instead of the traditional Christmas-y type party, we threw a Happy Birthday Jesus Party. The kids LOVED it!

We had cake, courtesy of one of our amazingly talented adult volunteers...



We watched a movie that explained the REAL meaning of Christmas and we got to eat yummy snacks while we watched it.



We got to wear fun birthday hats :)



And the best part of all was that we got to hear all about the true meaning of Christmas - celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.



All in all, I'd say it was a wonderful party. The kids were happy and the adults were too. The kids learned something valuable. So I left with a smile on my face :)

Hot Chocolate

Today I'm joining Erin and a whole lot of other bloggers for her bi-monthly Coffee Date link up, where we pretend like we are on a coffee date with a friend and then we share all of the things we would be talking about. 

But since this is my blog and I can do what I want, I'm scratching out coffee and replacing it with hot chocolate. Why? 1) Coffee's gross. 2) Hot Chocolate is amazing. 3) It's almost Christmas, which means it's cooler outside and it's perfect for hot chocolate :)

So if we were on a coffee hot chocolate date, I'd fill you in on life in my world lately...

I've never been one to track how many views a blog post gets. But this one has already gotten 600 views. That's crazy to me! :) And at the same time, it makes me super excited that people are learning more about the dream God put on my heart way back when. ...the dream to reach a group of kids who society typically casts aside. I'm so excited to see how God has caused so many details to already fall into place. And I definitely am looking forward to starting this class next year and seeing how God's going to work in the lives of the kids and families I'll serve (and my life as well). It's exciting! :)

I'd tell you that it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in my classroom. I love Christmas decorations! It just makes me smile to see all the colors and lights and fun stuff. And it helps that I have a very creative class this year who have helped me decorate :)

Speaking of Christmas, I'd show you the picture above and tell you the story about the child who drew it. I'd tell you how he loves talking about "the baby Jesus and Christmas" and how his eyes light up when we sing Christmas carols. I'd tell you about how I pray for this little guy and his family - that they'd see what Christmas is all about.

I guess I'd probably keep with the Christmas theme and I'd tell you how we're having our Kids Club Christmas party tomorrow. We're going with a Happy Birthday Jesus theme and I'm so excited about it! We're having a birthday cake, complete with candles. We're having some other yummy snacks and juice. We're watching a movie that tells why we celebrate Christmas in the first place. We're having a time of fellowship with eating, laughing, and chatting together. And I'm sure we'll throw in a few Christmas carols as well.

New Special Ed. Class Q & A

I've received a lot of questions since I published my If God Gives a Teacher a Dream post last month. In that post, I shared about a special dream God laid on my heart a while back, to create a class at my school for students with special needs so "severe" they're unable to function 100% of the time in the "regular" classroom. Since then, I've had lots of questions. So I thought I'd take the time to answer a few here...

When will this class start?

We'll be starting this class this coming up school year (2017-2018 school year). So come August this dream of mine will finally become a reality :)

Why are you raising funds? Doesn't your school buy the supplies/equipment you need?

My school does provide a bit of start up funds. But it is very minimal, as we were not planning for this class when the budget was created for this school year. And since we are literally starting this class from scratch, there are a LOT of supplies/equipment I need (and want) to help my students achieve the highest amount of success as possible.

How much more do you need to raise?

Well, when I started my 25 Days of Christmas Giving, I'd set a goal of $5000 to $6000. As of this past Friday, $1400 of that amount has been raised. More has been promised. But that's what's come in so far... 

Why raise such a high amount?

I'm sorry to repeat myself, but I am literally starting from scratch. There are a lot of supplies and equipment I will need. Students in a class like this will need things that you or I may not need. They will need to have the regular and adapted supplies. Different sized pencils, crayons, paintbrushes, etc... Flexible seating, more manipulatives for math, adaptive technology, and so much more...

What kind of students will you have?

My students will have academic, physical, and/or behavioral disabilities which prevent them from functioning successfully 100% of the time in a "regular" classroom. I will have students who are the children of missionaries, embassy personnel, and/or other various business men/women. And more than either of those two descriptions... I will have kids who are incredibly awesome!

What's the point?

There's a frustratingly all-too-common epidemic going around the USA and beyond which says that children that would benefit from a class like this simply cannot learn, and in that case, then what's the point in even having them at school? To that I would respond that every single person can learn some thing in some way. I am here to prove society wrong by working with the students who often need it the most. And also I am following the commandment God gave in proverbs 31:8, which says, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves..." My kids need me to speak up for and advocate for them to get the education they need and they deserve. And I can guarantee you this one thing... I will never stop doing that!

You could teach in America. Why not? You'd get paid more.

That's definitely true. And if God asked me to do that, I would. But I am where God wants me to be. Money is great, but it's not everything. Whether I make $10,000 a year or $50,000, I want to be in the will of God doing what He wants me to do, doing it where He wants me to be doing it. Plain and simple...

This is somewhat new to DA. Have you had any opposition to this class?

Yes. Sometimes when things are new and unknown people just don't understand. When you've never worked with students like this it can potentially be scary. But the benefits and rewards are so incredibly great. When you've never worked, or even interacted, with people like this, sometimes there is a level of ignorance... You truly don't know how amazingly awesome they are. So you make rude comments not realizing what you're doing. 

So yes, unfortunately, I have received a few discouraging comments since announcing this class. But that's okay because as I said earlier, I will continue to advocate for students, and people in general, like this. And I will continue to educate people on the amazing opportunity that awaits them if they get to know someone with a disability.

What has been your biggest encouragement through this fundraising process?

I have loved seeing how God's providing so quickly. And even more than that it has been fun to see all of the people who have donated so far. ...some of who I either do not know, or I just barely know them.

Any of those would be helpful. But if I were being honest... At this point, if you sent a donation of money or a gift card to my mom's house in Alabama that is something I could access the quickest. 

How can we pray?

Help me pray for the rest of the money to be raised and for me to be a wise steward of that money. Help me pray for open hearts and minds. Help me pray for awareness and acceptance. Help me pray for students and families who will be served by this class. Help me pray for all of the hundreds and thousands of little details that need to be worked out for this class to be successful.

Q & A

Happy December Facebook! It feels like just yesterday that the year was starting. It's hard to believe this year is almost over. Time flies, huh? :)

Anywho - On to the questions...

On a scale of 1-10, how happy are you with your job? 

Hmm... At this point, I'd say about a 12. :)

What'd you do this weekend?

On Saturday I went to a softball game and then spent the rest of the day hanging out with, and invading a friend's family's family time :) And then today I went to church and then out to lunch and then spent the rest of the afternoon working on lesson planning/prep work for the week. All in all, I'd say it's been a good weekend.

Excitement of the past week?

The overwhelming amount of responses I've gotten from people after reading Monday's post has been incredible! I love that so many people have expressed interest in partnering with me on fulfilling the dream God placed on my heart!

I'm reading The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George

I started it a few weekends ago. But then life got in the way. And I just didn't have to sit and read "for fun." I don't like reading for just 5 minutes here or there. I "need" to have a good, solid, chunk of time to read. That's probably weird. But that's who I am :) At any rate, this book is good. I enjoy it. And I'm hoping to finally finish it this week. 

Finish this sentence. If I could turn back time, I think I'd redo...

...a few things. But then again, my life is what it is. Sure, it hasn't been perfect. But would I really want to change anything about it? I'm honestly not so sure.

How quickly do you respond to emails?

I'm usually pretty fast about it. It drives me nuts otherwise. 

You're at the theater. What snack(s) do you buy?

I usually get a bottle of water and a popcorn with lots of butter. Yum!

It's time to do some Christmas shopping. Are you going online or to the store?

That depends. If I'm in the States, I'm definitely going to the store. If I can afford to, I love to shop! But If I'm in Senegal, though... It's more likely that I'll shop online.

How late is considered late for you to sleep in?

Honestly, if I can sleep 'til 7, I'm happy. 

Working on anything exciting right now?

I'm working to raise $6000 to furnish my classroom next year with the necessary supplies/equipment needed to help my students be as successful as they can be. Our Elementary Christmas program is always a favorite for me. And I even said yesterday that I think this year's program is my favorite one of all I've seen in my time at DA.



Oh and look at this cute picture I took at our performance yesterday. Seeing sweetness like this is always a favorite :)

Another favorite part of my job is sharing the love of Jesus with kids. ...ones like the sweet guy who decorated my whiteboard with a sweet Christmas greeting :)



Getting up early every morning may not be a favorite of some, but it is for me... I love having the extra time to get work done and seeing views like this one is nice too :)



Sometimes days get labeled as non-favorites. But then a sweet friend invites you out for some of your favorite ice cream. Ice cream and chats with sweet friends are definitely on my list of favorites :)



I think I have a new movie to add to my list of favorite children's films. My 5th graders chose Finding Dory as their reward movie the other day. It was so cute!



And last, but certainly not least, of one my most favorite parts of this past week has been the overwhelmingly awesome response to THIS blog post, where I shared how God is working to make a favorite dream of mine a reality.



The generosity of others sacrificially giving to this ministry opportunity, some people I don't even know, has been a favorite for sure!

  

Another favorite is a project I'm working on, fundraising for my class next year. I have 24 days left in my 25 Days of Christmas Giving Project to supply this class with the necessary supplies/equipment needed to make our students as successful as they can be. 



Without this class, many of these students' families would not be able to continue working here in Senegal as missionaries and others. It's such a valuable, important ministry opportunity...one I definitely do not take lightly. And I am just so grateful that God saw fit to give me this opportunity.

25 Days of Christmas Giving

As a girl, I loved making my Christmas Wish List. I'd pour over catalogs full of toys. I'd watch commercials with my pencil and paper in hand. I'd make sure I had my list ready when my Mom and Dad came looking for it. I knew all of the things I wanted...

Now I'm all grown up. 

My Christmas Wish List has changed. I want what most humans want... I want love and health and happiness. I want time with family and friends. I want success in my career. I want those I love to be happy and healthy. I want the blessings of God in everything I do.

And now, I have something else to add to my list.

My biggest wish at the moment is to fully fund the ministry God had called me to.

It all started with Proverbs 31:8 which says, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves." God chose that verse to pave the way for making my dream of a new Special Education class at my school a reality.  

This coming up school year, I will begin serving students who have been diagnosed with academic, physical, and/or behavioral disabilities that prevent them from successfully functioning in a typical general education classroom 100% of the school day. I am so incredibly excited to see how God works through this classroom. DA is here to provide a quality, Christian education to the children of missionaries, and others too as space allows. We are able to teach the gospel and show the love of Jesus to so many students, many of whom would have never heard about Him otherwise.

But I need help. 

Because I am starting this class completely from scratch, I need help financially (and through prayers too, of course) to raise what's needed to supply this class with the supplies/equipment desperately needed to make it the best it can be. I've calculated my Classroom Wish List and the total cost has come to around $5000 to $6000. This would allow me to purchase typical classroom supplies (paper, pencils, etc.), but also allow me to purchase some much needed technology (laptop, ipad, printer), two fairly expensive software programs (much needed to help students with speech/communication needs), adaptive music/art/PE supplies (in case my students aren't able to attend those classes with their "typical" peers), storage pieces (a locking filing cabinet for IEPs/confidential documents), shelving units, trays/buckets/baskets, etc.), flexible seating, manipulatives for math, a classroom library with books at various levels, items for teaching social/life skills, licenses for various necessary Special Education testing, and so much more.

My goal is to raise the bulk of this amount, if not all, by Christmas Day.

And as always, one of the biggest ways you can support this ministry and me is through praying. Pray for God to clearly guide me in planning for this class. Pray for the parents/students who will be served by this class. Pray for wisdom as the administration, parents, and I make decisions regarding placement, etc. for the students. Pray for necessary funds to arrive and for me to be a wise steward of those funds. And pray for every single little tiny detail to fall into place as God would have it.

If God gives a teacher a dream...

Have you heard of the popular children's book, 

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

The premise of the story is that if you do one thing, then another will have to happen. Then if you do that, yet another thing will have to happen. And so on and so forth. It's one of my favorite books to use in teaching young children. It's great!

Well, my version of this story actually begins around 10 years ago, with a younger me sitting in Dr. Hollie Cost's office at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. 

It all began with...

If you allow an education student to change her major to Collaborative Education, it'll change her career (and her life) in ways she can only imagine at the time.

By changing my major, I would be qualified to teach both General and Special Ed. I knew I was up for the challenge. But I honestly had no clue, at the time, just how much teaching, and more specifically, teaching Special Education, would affect my heart because...

If you give a teacher a group of students, they will most definitely cement themselves into a place in her heart.

I've taught for 8 1/2 years now, teaching General Ed., ESL, and Special Ed. In that time, I've taught 100+ students and I can truly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed every single group. Over the years, I've come to realize, though, that while I do love teaching in all areas I'm certified in, Special Ed. is definitely my favorite. 

It's my passion. So that's where the next part of my story comes in...

If a teacher knows that God has called her to teach Special Ed., she can't help but follow Proverbs 31:8 and become an advocate for those who need her.

One of the responsibilities of a Special Ed. teacher is to advocate for students.Yes, that typically means students in her care. But sometimes it means other students at her school. And sometimes it may mean future students she doesn't even know about yet. 

Now fast forward to May 2016 and the next part of my story...

If you inform a teacher that certain students will not be able to continue at your school due to limited resources and enough trained Special Education teachers, you will definitely start the wheels turning in that teacher's head.

We have a fabulous Special Ed. teacher at my school. I love her. Her students love her. She's great! But even though she has a HUGE heart, she's only one person. So she could only provide services for a certain number of students. It just was not possible for her to add students with more severe disabilities and special needs to her already full caseload (and have their educational needs met). One person can only do so much.

So she and I chatted off and on about a dream I had... I wanted to start a class for students with more "intense/severe" special needs. At the time, these students were not able to attend our school past grade 5, or earlier depending on their (dis)abilities. We counted up the number of students whose families had expressed interest in such a class and realized we totally had enough students to financially run this new class.

You see, the truth of the matter was...

If God gives a teacher a dream of reaching students, helping families, and showing love to others, then she will work as hard as possible to turn that dream into a reality.

So what did I do? I scheduled meetings. I wrote plans and proposals. I sent emails. I consulted with other Special Ed. teachers and specialists. I listened to guidance and advice from knowledgeable individuals. 

But most of all, I prayed. 

And then 2 weeks ago, I sat in a meeting, holding back tears, when I was informed that this dream of mine - this new class - would be approved (as long as certain conditions were met - which totally have been). 

And at that moment, the next part of my story played out in my head...

If God makes a promise, He will keep it.

So now we're caught up. 

This coming up school year, my title will change from the 5th Grade Teacher to Special Education Teacher of the Self-Contained Class (to be named something incredibly cool/awesome at a later date). The students I will serve will be diagnosed with academic, physical, and/or behavioral disabilities that prevent them from successfully functioning in a typical general education classroom 100% of the school day. 

So that's where the next part of the story comes in...

If a missionary teacher starts a new class at her K-12 International Christian school in Senegal, West Africa, she will definitely need help.

I need financial help. I'll be given (by the school) a small amount of money to purchase basic supplies and such. But since we're starting from scratch, there are a lot of items I need/want to make this classroom the best it can be. 

And that's where you come in...

If a teacher in West Africa needs help raising funds, she'll put the word out via her blog, Facebook, email, regular ol' "snail mail," and scheduling face to face chats for when she's back in the States for a couple weeks in December. 

I made a list of what is needed for the class. And the total cost has come to around $5000, just to get the necessary items to set up a class like this, completely from scratch. This will allow me to purchase the typical classroom supplies (paper, pencils, etc.) but it will also allow me to purchase some technology equipment, two expensive software programs to help students with communication needs, adaptive music/art supplies in case my students aren't able to attend those classes with their "typical" peers, adaptive PE equipment, storage pieces, flexible seating, manipulatives for Math, a classroom library with books at various levels, items for teaching social/life skills, licenses for various necessary Special Education testing, and so much more. 

I know this seems like a lot. And trust me... I could use even more than that if the truth were known... But think of all the items you would find in a typical/traditional classroom. These items have been slowly collected year after year by that teacher. I am literally starting completely from scratch.

Pray that we continue in meeting the mission of our school (to provide a quality education for the children of missionaries, and others as space allows). And above all, pray that through this, we show the love of Jesus to those around us and that we help further the Kingdom of God in Senegal and beyond.
